D-BUS is a message bus, used for sending messages between applications. Conceptually, it fits somewhere in between raw sockets and CORBA in terms of complexity.

This package contains several D-BUS related utilities like dbus-launch and dbus-send. By installing this package, a session dbus will automatically be started, so it is strongly recommended for desktop environments like Gnome.
